In 1999 to celebrate the hosting of the 1st World Park Tour Race in Britain, STAG initiated what has now become a thriving Annual Event - The Glasgow Parks Championships - 3 Parks in 1 Day! The idea was inspired by the wonderful variety of Parks that exist within our City & seen as a way to encourage Orienteers to enjoy our sport & a different type of challenge. For many years Orienteering was only considered as "THE FOREST SPORT" that couldn't take place anywhere else. STAG pioneered the use of local areas & so through education showed people that anywhere there is a map, one can enjoy Orienteering. With the 10th Anniversary Event scheduled for 7th December 2008 we extend a warm welcome to you all be you a serious competitor or a social competitor. Initially the event only offered 2 courses for Men & Women but as the numbers increased the structure had to be redesigned & with races starting at 10am , 12 Noon & 2pm travelling time between Parks was a big consideration.
Races 1 & 2 attempt to achieve a leading time of 10 > 12 minutes in all courses except Junior & Social with Race 3 - where there is a chasing start - a leading time between 20 > 25 minutes in each Class. Further to this, the Race 1 venue is only revealed by email on the preceding Thursday evening & parks 2 & 3 are only named after the preceding race on the Sunday. The table below names the venues used since 1999 but Glasgow has more Parks than this to offer including Elder, Robroyston, Darnley Mill Country Park, Hogganfield Loch Park, King's Park, Castlemilk Park & several others. To add a bit of intrigue to the event, entrants are invited to enter the "Guess The Parks Competition". By naming a park correctly a point is scored but by placing it in the correct order a second point is awarded.
