Advance Information About STAG’s 35th Anniversary Event on Sunday 1st Oct 2017

Following a final visit the planning is now complete & course information is shown below & limited to 35 controls !
Our thanks go to Colin Matheson, SOA’s Events Manager, The Garbutt Family of Sketewan Farm & Tay Fd.
Parking will be at Sketewan Farm with a short walk north along the B898 to the Start / Finish which are adjacent to the Forestry Commision’s Car Parking
Area - 500m / 5 minutes walk.

On line entries have now closed ; email Terry if you are looking for a late entry & I shall check map availability.

Located on the western side of the River Tay, STAG’s latest Map No.339 is of Grandtully Forest & covers a wide variety of terrain mostly within the Tay Forest Park.

Rising steeply from the B898 the forest’s north eastern slope consists of mixed deciduous & coniferous trees - steep but runnable with a plethora of control sites from which to choose.
Only the competitors on “Yellow” do not start off by heading up & then across this slope. They shall use the forest road as their main handrail then come back down the steep slope via the paths made by walkers & mountain bikers.

The area rises to a height of 340m at The Castle Dow Cairns & South & West of this there is a dramatic change in the woodland with mostly spruce plantation interspersed with large areas of rough open / marsh - some uncrossable marshes do also exist - and there are some lanes of runnability which will be required by those on the Long Course to traverse this area.

The remaining part of the Tay Fd Forest that has been mapped is to the North of the Castle Dow Cairns & is open, very runnable, deciduous woodland sloping back down to the valley below & a bit soft in places.

We are aware of several ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES within the area & these have been taped by the relevant body with Yellow Tape with the word “ARCHEOLOGY” printed in Black on the tape.
In planning I encountered 3 such sites & have avoided using them as control sites.

Start times informally from 11am until 12:30pm. Controls collected in from 2pm. If you expect to be out for a longish time please start as early as possible.

Yellow Course - 1.9k ; 130m climb - 7 controls.

Short Course - 2.8k ; 195m climb - 9 controls - Light Greenish.

Medium Course - 4.07k ; 200m climb - 13 controls - TD5.

Long Course - 5.25k ; 250m climb - 15 controls - TD5.

I can also report that the bracken/ferns are already beginning to die back !
