ORIENTEERINGLASGOW - Glasgow's Permanent Course NetworkUpdated 16th November 2024.
Following a full review, there are no current plans to either repair or extend the network of courses. A lack of support/interest to refund the necessary repairs added to the real difficulty of how to make the maps accessible to the general public have influenced this decision.
Throughout 2023/2024, approaches to gain financial support to refresh and refurbish our network of permanent courses - ORIENTEERINGLASGOW* - fell on deaf ears and so we considered going ahead under our own steam to create a useable resource for club training and leisure use by the general public.
The plan involved reducing the number of parks with permanent courses with markers in place but in each park installing at least 35 controls compared to less than 20 controls.
This model copies the successful model installed in almost 70 schools over the past few years but sadly this is now on hold.
Map availability
This has proved to be a real difficulty and cannot easily be overcome.
For those who are in membership of STAG either as a STAG/SOA/BOF Member or a Friend of STAG Member, a monthly PDF can still be requested from 31st March 2024 for personal use by sending an email to info@stag-orienteering.co.uk and in return a PDF shall be supplied by email. There is no cost involved as the individual shall need to print the map at home and agree not to photocopy and pass to third parties.
A cost shall be made to Non-members but this is still to be determined.
Requests from Schools, Youth Groups & Uniformed Organisations
Such requests shall be dealt with on an individual basis and may involve bespoke learning packs being created.
As of 26th December 2023 an audit of the current courses is shown below and the only map which is on sale to the public is Pollok CP from 'Knowehead / Park Office' located west of The Burrell Collection.
